As many have suggested, this is a personal preference/eye of the beholder sort of topic. Luckily, there are tons and tons of armor sets (and the ability to mix and match) for you to find the look you like. There are some armor sets I would not choose for my characters, but I would not call them ugly, because what’s “ugly” to one person can be the coolest armor in the game to another and I wouldn’t rightly want to state my opinion as fact.

I think the mixed responses in this thread prove just how subjective this topic is.

The only Primeval armors I like are mesmer and dervish. Still, I think it's cool that there are armors available for people who like grotesque, over-the-top styles.

I actually think all the Ancient armors look really good. The assassin Ancient is too spiky for my taste, but that is not a problem with Ancient alone.

For my male Assassin, my favorite armor combo:

Ancient Mask
Vabbi Chest/Legs
Obsidian Arms and Boots

All dyed Black.

For my female Ele

Sunspear 15k dyed gold. Hawt.

Female Rit

Ancient, dyed red. Super hawt.

For my male Dervish I'm kind of undecided on. I like the Vabbi for the Arabian Nights theme to it, but its a bit expensive. Ancient is definitely interesting, however if you dye it yellow you end up looking like Birdman, I don't like the hood. Primeval is just so cliche, everyone and their dog has it.

But the award for Worst Armor HAS to be Primeval Warrior, its even worse than the Blair Witch reject Ele armor. Why? Who REALLY wants to run around looking like a Power Rangers villain? For shame!

Male Primeval ftw. Based on the Master Chief Design from HALO. Sectioned out with some spikes and modelling. Other than that. NICE.

Very good point. When can we see teasers of armor for Eye of the North? Hmmmmm?

I, personally love most, if not all the Ancient armors. The Primeval? Meh. I like warrior, mesmer, and I'm iffy on Dervish. The rest are just, meh, or straight up ugly, IMO. Again, this is definately a Subjective thing. Obviously, they were all pretty freakin sweet to the designers, otherwise they wouldn't have designed them. That's at least one person that liked any particular armor.

Kind of been debating about some of the Nightfall armors; I personally enjoyed some of the Faction armor way above the other two campaigns. For my Devrish I went with the Vabbian look, since I thought more highly of it, then the other stuff which felt a bit mundane to the original armor set. The Primeval stuff looked somewhat okay, but I went with something else instead.

Yeeeessss... Of course it's subjective, but I guess my point is that I, personally, subjectively don't like the direction GW art is going.

The impression I get is that the design team has run out of ideas, and create the top armors by taking a basic armor and adding various protrusions: a spike here, a wing there, a dragon on top.
This is especially a problem as the Nightfall armors are so much better, specs-wise, than the Factions or Prophecies armors that I feel like an idiot for using Factions/Prophecies armor just because I hate the look of the (far superior) Nightfall armors.

I don't mind that there are over-the-top armors in the game. If people want to look like Conan The Hedgehog or Asphyxias The Necro Fishmonger, I say let them.
I'm worried about the trend that increasingly there isn't anything ELSE.

I dont see that at all.
What it is, imo, is simply choosing a theme, and sticking with it.
All the armors in factions and beyond all have matching thematic style.

Nightfall is based on african themes, and i think thats really what people's problems with it is since their style falls outside contemporary western concepts of what looks good. Hence why some of this stuff is just so over the top.

Theres always the option of the vanilla armors for ya.

If they chose the alligator skin armor instead of the "nightmare" armor as the primeval set, i think it would still fit the theme though....

With the exception of the necro armor adorned with black feathers... which one of the armors I posted links to look African to you?
I will agree that a few of the armors are vaguely african in inspiration (e.g. ancient warrior is adorned in a kind of samurai-egyptian way, and the vabbian helmet is vaguely saracen) but for most I don't see anything african about them.

I'd agree with most of it. I found the armor in NF pretty 'meh'. some of it is downright silly. Ancient Necro, Assassin, & Primeval Ele, Necro, Monk.. really don't like those. Although Primeval Warrior & Ancient Ele are awesome

Ancient Assassin - They maintain the theme is in the detailing of the bandaging, hinting towards the egyptian theme.
Ancient Ritualist - Mummy theme continued.

As for the Primeval armors, the idea behind the primeval armor seems is primitive art inspired and very organic feel to the materials used on the detailing pieces.

Warrior - Bone
Ranger - insect shell
Monk - horns
Mesmer - the frilly stuff and the weird stuff that looks like its growing out of it o.o
Necro - blood and skin....
Elementalist - sticks!
Paragon - the detailing looks very leaflike in its styling.
Dervish - Fossil spiky things

Call me different but I do like the primevil female ele armour, but yah, on the male it looks pretty silly. Still it's not what my ele wears so I don't like it that much...

I have to agree with the OP's comments about the others, though I do think the mummy looking rit is cool in a way.

For sins the only thing I like are the gloves on the vabbian, I prefer imperial to the rest.

Just a different style. I play a male mesmer - and for me, Nightfall armors are the best ones yet.

Not FACTIONS armor, that was a neverending stream of horrid. Seriously - a mask with a beak and an instant weight-gain and beer-belly - or a short skirt - or gothic gargoyle-look?

Opinion.

It might go with the profession to get a feeling if it's ugly or not but Anceint Armor immediatly caught my eye when I saw it while deciding which ascended armor I wanted to buy for my Dervish. Primevial Armor looked like I'd be carrying fish skeletons around...blades are a lot cooler.

The Ranger ancient armor > all other ranger armors imo, well except maybe 15k Canthan (still probably my personal favorite).

Monk ancient armor is basically a cheaper version of vabbian...

Warrior armor, well ok just the male armors, are HIDEOUS!!!!!!

The only decent sin armor is the vabbian or 15k kurzik. nuff said...

Dervish = vabbian if youre female. others are out of place for the most part.

Ele = win on 90% of the armors. no complaints there outside of the primevil set for either male or female.... Yeah i really wanna look like a Hurricane Katrina Refugee....

Mesmer.... about 50/50 on mes armors. Male mesmers get the shaft, and females u either look like a nun, a dominatrix, or a slut... good times

Necro... has probably some of the coolest looking armors in the game, period.

Paragon... they all look way too similar. and for the love of god lose the nipples on the armor...

Ritualists... You all got the shaft on armors. I wish you had some decent armors besides the 15k kurzik and the fow armor...

Just my opinions on armors imo

The African theme in Nightfall isn't "Hey, look at these primitive peoples and their clothes made out of sticks" - it's "Hey, see this incredibly advanced culture flourish in a hostile environment." Nightfall is full of lush, watered cities, palaces, libraries, bureaucracy, princes, etc. - I think that's what the ancient Egyptian theme is meant to evoke, since generally the only thing people really know about ancient Egypt is that it was advanced for its time and they used heiroglyphics.

I think this is, in general, something that all three chapters of GW have highlighted - little pockets of human thriving in a world that isn't very kind. But when you compare the three, Prophecies where you have one last major outpost of civilization in Lion's Arch and a kind of broken culture, Factions where you are bogged down in the muck of Kaineng City or else in a fantastical outland, and Nightfall, where the desert reaches everywhere and civilization still manages to overcome...I think that Nightfall is actually, in terms of man-against-nature and progress-of-cilvilization, the major success story.
